Generalized Skew Derivations with Engel Conditions on Lie Ideals

Let R be a prime ring and L a noncommutative Lie ideal of R. Suppose that f is a nonzero right generalized β-derivation of R associated with a β-derivation δ such that [f(x), x]k = 0 for all x ∈ L, where k is a fixed positive integer. Then either there exists s ∈ C scuh that f(x) = sx for all x ∈ R or R ⊆ M2(F ) for some field F . Moreover, if the latter case holds, then either charR = 2 or cha...

Finite Derivation Type for Large Ideals

In this paper we give a partial answer to the following question: does a large subsemigroup of a semigroup S with the finite combinatorial property finite derivation type (FDT ) also has the same property? A positive answer is given for large ideals. As a consequence of this statement we prove that, given a finitely presented Rees matrix semigroup M [S; I, J ;P ], the semigroup S has FDT if and...

Left 3-engel Elements in Groups

In this paper we study left 3-Engel elements in groups. In particular, we prove that for any prime p and any left 3-Engel element x of finite p-power order in a group G, x is in the Baer radical of G. Also it is proved that 〈x, y〉 is nilpotent of class 4 for every two left 3-Engel elements in a group G.

An Engel Curve for Variety

Standard approaches to measuring the welfare gains from variety take variety as exogenous to consumers. Empirically we observe an Engel curve for variety, with richer consumers purchasing a larger set of varieties than poor ones. I present a tractable model for analyzing the welfare gains from variety in the presence of this non-homotheticity. The model generates variety Engel curves through di...

Constants of Derivation and Differential Ideals

Let R be a differential domain finitely generated over a differential field F of characteristic 0. Let C be the subfield of differential constants of F. This paper investigates conditions on differential ideals of R that are necessary or sufficient to guarantee that C is also the set of constants of differentiation of the quotient field, E, of R. In particular when C is algebraically closed and...
